Doctorow Weighs in On Mature Subjects in YA Fiction

Cory Doctorow has an excellent column on Locus Online about  sex and other mature subjects in Young Adult Fiction.  Here’s the heart of the piece:

There’s really only one question: “Why have your characters done something that is likely to upset their parents, and why don’t you punish them for doing this?”

Now, the answer.

First, because teenagers have sex and drink beer, and most of the time the worst thing that results from this is a few days of social awkwardness and a hangover, respectively. When I was a teenager, I drank sometimes. I had sex sometimes. I disobeyed authority figures sometimes.

Mostly, it was OK. Sometimes it was bad. Sometimes it was wonderful. Once or twice, it was terrible. And it was thus for everyone I knew. Teenagers take risks, even stupid risks, at times. But the chance on any given night that sneaking a beer will destroy your life is damned slim. Art isn’t exactly like life, and science fiction asks the reader to accept the impossible, but unless your book is about a universe in which disapproving parents have cooked the physics so that every act of disobedience leads swiftly to destruction, it won’t be very credible. The pathos that parents would like to see here become bathos: mawkish and trivial, heavy-handed, and preachy.

Jurassic Park 4?

jurassic park 4

Although there’s no official go-ahead from Universal,  Jurassic Park 3 director Joe Johnston had this to say to AICN in a recent interview:

There is a great story for [Jurassic Park 4] that I would be interested in getting involved with, and it’s nothing like the first three … It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved.

He also adds that this will be nothing like the first three.  It won’t be a story about people struggling to survive dinos on an island:

We’ve done that and it’s been done three times …

He also suggests we’re past due for a new Jurassic Park film:

I think we are at that point where we are due for another one if we are going to do it. They had what four years between them? 1992… 1996 or 1997, and then 2001, so we are past due.

With Hollywood going sequel mad, it seems likely this will happen at some point.  And, unlike most franchises, we think Jurassic Park still has the sinewy reptile legs to carry it through a few more iterations.

This might be a bit disturbing for those who believe all the events in the Twilight Saga are real.  And, knowing Twilight fans, that’s more than we’d like to admit.

For the rest of you, this a fun bit of video.

Insert Hemingway joke here.

From Science Daily:

The remaining ice fields atop famed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania could be gone within two decades and perhaps even sooner, based on the latest survey of the ice fields remaining on the mountain .

The findings indicate a major cause of this ice loss is very likely to be the rise in global temperatures. Although changes in cloudiness and precipitation may also play a role, they appear less important, particularly in recent decades.

Clever tag line.  Nice graphics.  Just one damn fine teaser poster.

Our cautious optimism about this film grows by the day.

Sometimes small isn’t great.  With bank balances, DVD collections and … cough … other things, large is in charge.  But when it comes to remote-controlled aircraft, small is awesome.

And the people who made the HoverDrone know this.  So they created this tiny hovering RC aircraft that fits in the palm of your hand and flies like nobody’s business.  And it costs less than a deluxe pizza.
