Photo: First Image of Chris Hemsworth as THOR!

Here’s the first shot of Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Kenneth Branagh’s adaption of Marvel Comics’ Norse superhero.  Looks excellent.  And, for once, it appears true to the comic.  It bears strong resemblance to the costume Thor currently wears:

And this version of the costume really isn’t that far removed from Jack Kirby’s original sixties design:

Nice to see the movies treating comic book source material with some respect.

Conan Doyle Ghost Painting Up for Auction

Posted in Art, Ghosts, Weird News with tags , , , on April 29, 2010 by ghostradioworld

The above painting of spectral soldiers, which once belonged to Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle, will be auctioned off as part of the Owston Collection in Sydney with Bohams on June 25 and 26, 2010.

The painting is by Australian Artist William Francis Longstaff.   It is entitled “The Rearguard  (Spirit of the ANZAC”).  It was painted in 1927.  Longstaff supposedly felt compelled to make this painting, and completed it in a single day of inspired work.

It is suggested that Conan Doyle may have bought the painting due to his interest in spiritualism, or as way to ease the pain he felt over death of his son in the First World War.   The painting was believed to be lost for many years.  And it is currently unclear how it became part of the Owston collection.

Teens Blame Car Crash on UFO

Windshield reportedly damaged in UFO incident.

According to the UFO Examiner, of couple of teens in Laconia, New Hampshire claim that the windshield and underside of their car was damaged when a UFO picked up the car and hurled it 180 feet.

The teenagers were in a parking lot when they saw a large object round object in the sky.  The object moved toward them.  Then the driver claims:

It flew so fast over the trees getting closer to where we were. It felt like it was zeroing in on us. It blocked the moon. And then, we started panicking and driving away.

I thought were were going to hit the Bingo building. We turned left but it felt like we went off of a jump – you know that feeling? like we were on a rollercoaster? And we were in the air. I was trying to pay attention to everything that was going on but it felt like I couldn’t. When I looked up, everything was black. The smell was not nice but it was like something you could stand. It was an odor I’ve never smelled before. I heard absolutely nothing – it was silent. I felt immobilized like I had no control over what I was doing or over my body. I could see nothing. It was like opening your eyes in a pitch black room.I felt really nervous and scared. I don’t remember crying or screaming. I held on to the center console because I felt like I was lifted. I was holding on so tight that my thumbprint is imprinted on the center console.

And then, when I finally realized what was happening, I was so close to the windshield that my body was going forward with my arms behind me. Everything was black. I heard a loud noise like a horn. Once. And then, the car just dropped.

I hit my eye on the dashboard and the airbags came out. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I held my face and I looked over at my boyfriend. I saw that his left arm had blood. I said, “Are you OK?” I looked at the windshield and it was cracked, totally, but only on the passenger side.

The incident resulted a cracked windshield and $5,000 of damage to the underside of the car.

Now we’re as open to UFO stories as Fox Mulder, but even we think this sounds like a rather flimsy way for a couple of teenagers to explain away a car accident.  But, frankly, we doubt “Mom, it was a UFO” will go over too big in these teens’ households.

Stephen Hawking Thinks Aliens Pose Threat to Humanity!

Posted in Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror, Video, Weird News with tags , , , , on April 27, 2010 by ghostradioworld

Physicist Stephen Hawking says in his new TV series “Into the Universe” that he believes humanity’s first contact with intelligent alien life will be a violent one:

If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the American Indians.

He also thinks it’s very likely that intelligent alien life is out there.   This is one idea for what he thinks they may be like:

I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.

Hawking’s series airs on The Discovery Channel.

UK Ghost and Demon Sightings at 25 Year High!

The Telegraph reports on a study by that found:

that despite being in time of accelerating technology, 21st century Britons have not turned their back on ghouls, boggarts, hell-hounds, witches, wizards, banshees and black magic curses, with a whopping 968 reports of demonic activity in the past 25 years.

The study also named Yorkshire as the center of demon and ghost sightings in the UK:

Yorkshire [is] the centre of ghostly goings-on demonic activity with 74 reports of demons, including Uncabus and Succubus (male and female demons that make sexual attacks on sleeping victims), instances of demonic possession and sightings of hell hounds, water demons and demons with repulsive forms such as ghouls and werewolves.

Sightings of demons in Yorkshire have included a hideous shadow-like hell-hound with no discernible facial features which collided with a car between Northallerton and Leeming Bar on the A684. A sea-going water demon has also been reported off Filey Bay in Yorkshire. Witnesses claimed to have seen a ghostly creature with a long neck, a vast serpentine body and glowing eyes.

Wonder if this will increase or decrease tourist interest in Yorkshire?

Paramount Still Wants to Make WORLD WAR Z!

Posted in Books, Movies, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror on April 27, 2010 by ghostradioworld

Max Brooks  told Fearnet that Hollywood still wants to turn his best seller World War Z into a movie:

Paramount just renewed the option for World War Z, for half the time and twice the money, so that might signal interest. We still got our director, Marc Forster, who’s raring to go. Were all waiting on Matt Carnahan’s new draft, which should come in a month or so. Once that comes in then I think it probably will have to be tweaked and brought to the studio but we’re sort of zeroing in on that moment where Paramount has to say yes or no.

Brooks notes that the scale of the novel remains one of the stumbling blocks:

I think the size of the book, the scope of the book, makes it hard to produce, in that this thing’s gotta be done right or it just can’t be done. You can’t do a cheap and dirty World War Z. It’s a world war, and I think that makes studio executives nervous. I think it limits its options, so that’s running against it.

If you haven’t read World War Z, run, don’t walk to nearest book store and grab a copy.  Truly one of the best horror novels of the decade.

Ridley Scott Confirms “Space Jockey” Plot of ALIEN Prequel!

Posted in Movies, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror, Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 24, 2010 by ghostradioworld

For some time fans of the Alien franchise have suggested the Alien prequel would involve the “space jockey”.  (That attractive alien dude above.  He even has his own wiki.)  But this had not officially been confirmed by Ridley Scott … until now.

In a recent interview with MTV, Scott said:

[The Alien prequel is] set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley]. It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?’ The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer’s chair. Remember that?

In addition to the Space Jockey what else is the film about?  Well, Scott let this slip:

[The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.

Scott also had this to say about the script:

As we speak, I’ve got a pile of pages next to me; it’s like the fourth draft. It’s a work in progress, but we’re not dreaming it up anymore. We know what the story is. We’re now actually trying to improve the three acts and make the characters better, build it up to something [we can shoot]. It’s a work in progress, but we’re actually making the film. There’s no question about it, we’re going to make the film.

And he had this to say about H.R. Giger’s involvement in the prequel:

Yeah, [H.R. Giger is] still around. Once I get more serious and get going, and the big wheels start turning, we’ll certainly talk. And maybe we’ll come up with something completely different.

Finally, for total geeks, he dropped this little bit of in-story history:

[The Weyland-Yutani Company is]  Weyland. Weyland hasn’t joined Yutani yet, so they go and see Weyland.

All this is quite intriguing.  But Alien fans should remain skeptical.  The odds are still against anyone being able to re-invigorate the Alien franchise.  Even Scott himself.

But, hopefully, Scott will buck the odds.  And deliver a fantastic film.
