Rise of the Apes is on track to take $50 million in its opening weekend.  Earnings which will easily grant it the number one spot at the box office, well ahead of  The Smurfs ($18 million) and Cowboys and Aliens ($15 million).    Has a new Planet of the Apes franchise been born?  We give that question an affirmative ape howl!  The coming decade shall be full of talking, CGI apes.

The first half of the trailer is too Franco-phony.  But the end finally gets apetastic.  We’re quite skeptical about this film, but we’re warming … a bit.

PLANET OF THE APES Prequel On the Fast Track Again!

According to Variety,  20th Century Fox has given their new Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes a release date.  They claim the film will hit theatres June 24, 2011.

Rupert Wyatt is attached as director and Peter Jackson’s effects house WETA Digital will create CGI “photoreal apes” for the film.

This is how Variety describes the story:

“Rise of the Apes,” set in present-day San Francisco, is a cautionary tale about experiments with genetic engineering. In the movie, those experiments lead to the development of intelligence in apes, and the onset of a war for supremacy.

This project looked dead a few times, but it seems once again to have firm studio backing.  Color us skeptical of the whole thing.  But we can’t help but getting a little excited about a new Apes film.
