With a new adaptation of “Jane Eyre” hitting the multiplexes across the pond and DVD shelves stateside, we dug into our archives to pull out this gem.  Orson Welles’ adaptation of  “Jane Eyre” from the Campbell Playhouse broadcast of March 31, 1940.  And, if you think “Jane Eyre” is just some ancient bit of “chick-lit”.    Think again.  It may be that.  But it’s also a major inspiration for Gothic horror.  Don’t believe us?  Click play:

In 1943, Orson Welles would star in a film adaptation of “Jane Eyre” opposite Joan Fontaine.  And it’s a wonderful adaptation full of Gothic atmosphere.  But, frankly, we prefer this version.  Despite a running time of slihghtly less than an hour, it manages to delve more deeply into the dark recesses of the story.

The most famous Christmas ghost story is Charles Dickens’  “A Christmas Carol.”  On this Christmas Eve, the Ghost Radio blog is proud to present not one, not two, but three radio adaptation of this timeless classic.

The first one stars Lionel Barrymore and was presented on Orson Welles’ famous radio program The Campbell Playhouse.  This production was performed a number of times, but this recording comes for December 23, 1938.

The second production features Laurence Olivier both as narrator and the voice of Scrooge.  This production was originally broadcast on Theatre Royale on December 24, 1953.

This is “The Hitchhiker” from a 1942 broadcast of the radio show Suspense.  You may have seen a version of this story on The Twilight Zone.  But we like this version better.  And it stars Orson Welles!

And we feel it’s very much in keeping with the style and tone of the novel Ghost Radio.

So dim the lights, hit the play button and prepare for half an hour of spine-tingling horror.

Wikipedia has a fascinating write-up on Lucille Fletcher the author of this classic radio drama.  You can read it here.

In the dusty catacombs of the Ghost Radio archives, we have many shows like this.  So if there’s a scary radio drama you’d like to hear, request it in the comments section, and we’ll try to put it on the site.

Keep checking back at the site throughout the night.  Still more Halloween goodies to come.
