Doctor Who

“Doctor Who” fans have been on pins and needles for weeks.   They’ve struggled through the longest wait for an announcement of the next Doctor since Jon Pertwee was announced more than forty years ago.  And almost every day a new front runner seems to have have entered the mix.  People with “inside sources” have claimed the next Doctor would ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY be Ben Daniels, no, it’s Rory Kinnear, no wait it’s Julian Bleach, no, it’s most certainly Daniel Rigby, no, it’s Peter Capaldi!  And that leaves out countless other names that have been plumped for by journos and eager fans.

The end result being:  No one has no idea who it will be.  Even the usual confident rumor hounds are just shrugging.  But we don’t much longer to wait.  On Sunday at 7:00 PM, UK Time, the next Doctor will be announced on a live special on BBC One.   And, fear not American fans, you won’t be left out  of the loop.  The special will simultaneously be broadcasted on BBC America!  Watch a trailer for it after the jump.

The BBC officially confirmed this morning:

Contrary to press reports today we can confirm that no new episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures will be filmed following the tragic death of actress Elisabeth Sladen in April, 2011. As a tribute to Elisabeth the six episodes that were recorded with her last year will be broadcast on CBBC at a date to be confirmed.

Not surprising.  But it would have been nice to have had some type of clip show/wrap up.

Radio 4’s program “Thinking Allowed” devoted a segment this week to an examination of the political side of “Doctor Who”.  The segment is fascinating, and we thought you’d like to give it a listen.

Video: Pertwee and Tennant Support Labour Party

In this ad two actors with “Doctor Who” connections show their support for the Labour Party in the upcoming UK elections.   The onscreen actor is Sean Pertwee the son of Jon Pertwee who played the Doctor from 1970-74.  Sean makes a reference to his father at the beginning of the video.   David Tennant, who played the Doctor from 2005-2010, offers the voice over at the end of the video.

And, whatever you politics, I think most would admit it’s quite an effective ad.   It’s also a must watch for “Doctor Who” completists.

Doctor Who Confuses Children!

Jon (Doctor Who) Pertwee here launches a children’s traffic safety campaign.  But the BFI notes,  “The slogan proved far too complex for children to remember – in a survey of 595 children, precisely none could recall what each letter stood for.”

I dare you to remember what any of the letters stand for after watching the video.

Great video which chronicles every use of the Sonic Screwdriver on Doctor Who from the first use by Patrick Troughton to the most recent use by David Tennant.   Enjoy!
