You get to see P.J. do a bit of acting in this one.  And lots of fun stuff about the first block of shooting.  Stick with this one till the end.  There’s a very special surprise in store!

We about a year and a half from the theatrical release of The Hobbit.  But that’s not too soon to get a bit of a peek into the production with these three exclusives from Entertainment Weekly.  We get our first look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins (above).  And quite a Bilbo he makes too.  Here’s what P.J. has to say about him:

He fits the ears, and he’s got some very nice feet … I think he’s got the biggest hobbit feet we’ve had so far. They’re a little bit hard to walk in, but he’s managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait.

And speaking of feats, Ian McKellan is  doing one of the hardest feats in the movie business: Playing younger.  See how he fares after the jump.

THE HOBBIT Casting News!

Posted in Movies, Photos, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror, Television with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 2, 2011 by ghostradioworld

Several weeks after the departure of Rob Kazinsky, Peter Jackson has this to report via his Facebook page:

Dean O’Gorman [above left] will be playing Fili.  Dean’s a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He’s recently been in an excellent TV series down here called “The Almighty Johnsons”, and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year.  Dean will be joining us next week.

Hmmm … we remember this guy from years ago, when he played Iolaus in “Young Hercules“.  And remember who played “Hercules” in that?  A golden no prize to the people who said “Ryan Gosling”.    Yup, he was a just a young-un back then.  Time flies.

And in other casting news:

I’m also pleased to announce that Lee Pace [above right]will be playing the Elven King Thranduil. Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil. He’s going to be great.  We loved his performance in a movie called “The Fall” a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since.  When we were first discussing who would be right for Thranduil, Lee came into mind almost immediately.

Pace has been a solid performer in a variety of TV projects, including “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies“.

Is There a Curse of THE HOBBIT Movie?

Some think so.  And here’s another bit of evidence to add to the pile from P.J.’s Facebook page:

I am sad to report that Rob Kazinsky, who was cast in the role of Fili, is having to leave The Hobbit and return home, for personal reasons.  Rob has been terrific to work with and his enthusiasm and infectious sense of humour will be missed by all of us. I should say that Rob’s departure will not affect ongoing filming of The Hobbit, nor will it impact work done to date, as we had yet to film much of Fili’s storyline. At the moment we are shooting scenes featuring Bilbo without the Dwarves, which will give us time to find a new Fili. I’ll keep everyone posted with updates as they come.

Cheers,

Peter J

If stuff like this continues expect the curse talk to ratchet up!
