The reformed Hammer Studios has announced they will be remaking their 1957 classic The Abominable Snowman. It will be produced by Ben Holden (The Quiet Ones) and penned by Matthew Read (Pusher) and Jon Croker (Angel of Death). Hammer has released no details on the remake other than that it will offer a “contemporary take” on the original.

The original was based on a teleplay by Nigel Kneale (Quatermass) which offers a sober and contemplative approach to the material. Something you’ll see little evidence in the bombastic American release trailer post above which retitles the film The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas. They wanted to make sure no one would confuse it with all those other Abominable Snowmen … or something. The film was released on DVD in the US by Anchor Bay in 2000, but is out of print and goes for high prices. However, UK releases from Hammer and Icon are both still available. And reasonably priced. So, if you haven’t seen it, snag a cop, fire up the all region player and enjoy one of Hammer’s best. And then you’ll be ready to offer snooty opinions when the remake comes out. And we all love to do that!
