The Weinstein Company is in trouble these days. And it may be Dimension that saves their bacon.
In a recent interview with Variety, Dimension head Bob Weinstein said, “I’m going back to doing what I do best.” What does that mean? Well, that means emphasizing franchises and 3D.
Neve Campbell will be returning for Scream 4, Robert Rodriguez will be offering a Spy Kids 4, and remakes of Hellraiser and Scanners are in the offing … in 3D! Short Circuit and An American Werewolf in London are also slated for 2D remakes.
“These films are our strength, and we are committed to doing them in style,” Weinstein told Variety.
Hmmm … not sure about that. Dimension made its name with original Horror franchises. Not going the reheat route. And though remakes and 3D may look like a safe bet in these difficult times, will it ever replace the power of an exciting new franchise? We don’t think so.
This move may keep Dimension alive. But we doubt it will lend them the dominance they once had. Because the an old school move at the end of the day just feels … old.
