The first of the summer superhero blockbusters, Thor had a leg-up by opening several weeks ago in other territories, allowing the film to rack up a cool $176 million foreign already. This weekend they’ve added $66 million to that domestic, giving them a global cum of $242 million. Even a God won’t sneeze at a number like that.
Jim Shooter, one of the most interesting figures in comicdom, now has a blog. As a writer he’s been hugely influential. (He started writing Legion of Superheroes for DC Comics while still in High School.) As editor-in-chief of Marvel he became notorious. And as the creator o f superhero universes for independent companies ( e.g. Valiant, Defiant and Broadway Comics) he was ahead of his time.
On his blog, he answers questions on a wide range of subjects, and offers information on his latest projects. If you’re a Shooter fan (we are!) or just want learn more about the man, this blog is a treasure trove. Visit it here.
Two high adrenalin slabs of superhero goodness. Sit back, crank up the audio on the computer, and enjoy!

This week Stan Lee released a new book Stan Lee’s How to Draw Comics. A callback to the classic volume How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way (published in 1984 ), this books takes readers through the basics of drawing for comic books with the trademark humor and asides that have made Lee famous. All this makes it a solid and entertaining introduction to the subject.
Deadline Hollywood reports that ABC is currently in the “early stages of development” on a live action series based on the Marvel’s Incredible Hulk.
It is unclear how this relates to the plans for the Hulk’s continued appearance on the big screen. Although we know that Mark Ruffalo is under contract to play the Bruce Banner/Hulk in the upcoming Avengers movie. Nor is it known at this time whether there will be any connection between this series, and the original TV series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.
Despite all that, we’re rather keen on the idea of the Hulk returning to the small screen. But they better not screw it up. Because that would make us angry. And you wouldn’t like us when we’re angry.
Or maybe a bad Hulk series will just make us feel like this …
Bob Harras has been named as the new Editor in Chief at DC Comics. Harras was the Editor at DC’s competitor Marvel from 1995-2000. Since then he has been working at DC subsidiary Wildstorm, before moving into the DC collected editions division earlier this year. This seems to be a safe but uninspired choice. But at least they chose someone from the world of comics.
According to E! Online, Natalie Portman has an interesting reason for taking on a role in the Thor:
I just thought it sounded like a really weird idea I just thought it sounded like a really weird idea ’cause Kenneth Branagh‘s directing it … And Ken Branagh doing Thor is super weird. I’ve got to do it.
Branagh is an odd chocie, but not so much when you remember the tone and battle scenes in his Henry V. We do think it’s weird that Portman is already calling Branagh “Ken”. He just doesn’t seem like a “Ken” to us.
