Posted in Audio, Books, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror with tags , , , , , , , , on December 24, 2009 by ghostradioworld

This is a repost from last year for those that missed it.  And, it being the season of giving, rather than suggesting you search the archives, we thought we’d just repost it.

The most famous Christmas ghost story is Charles Dickens’  “A Christmas Carol.”  On this Christmas Eve, the Ghost Radio blog is proud to present not one, not two, but three radio adaptation of this timeless classic.

The first one stars Lionel Barrymore and was presented on Orson Welles’ famous radio program The Campbell Playhouse.  This production was performed a number of times, but this recording comes for December 23, 1938.

The second production features Laurence Olivier both as narrator and the voice of Scrooge.  This production was originally broadcast on Theatre Royale on December 24, 1953.

Arguably the most famous ghost story gets yet another film treatment. This story seems especially suited to performance capture technology.

A Different Charles Dickens Ghost Tale for Christmas!

In Victorian England, ghost stories were a common form of Christmas entertainment.  It’s often neglected that the most famous Victorian Christmas story, Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, is also ghost story.

But 19 years after publishing that tale, Dickens offered another ghost story in the Christmas edition of the publication All Year Round.  Although the story has no distinct Christmas elements, it’s the type of ghost story that thrilled the population of Victorian England during the Christmas Season.

Included here are two adaptations of this classic story.

This one is from the series Suspense.  It was originally broadcast on November 11, 1956.

This one is from the NPR series Nightfall.  It was originally broadcast December 17, 1982.
