GODZILLA (1954) to Get Criterion DVD/Blu-Ray Release!

Posted in Movies, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror, Toys with tags , , , , , , , on August 23, 2011 by ghostradioworld

Hints have been bouncing around the ‘net for some time about Criterion giving the original Godzilla a deluxe, proper DVD and Blu-Ray transfer.  But many poo-pooed them.  Claiming it wasn’t the type of thing Criterion did.  Or other lame dismissals.  Then a mysterious photo (above) of a film can with Japanese writing appeared on the Criterion Facebook page.  The writing translates:   “Dupe Posi(tive): GODZILLA. Reel 2 of 10 Reels. Toho Company, Ltd.”!

For those who understand the Criterion mindset.  This can only mean one thing:  Criterion is indeed doing a DVD/Blu-Ray release.  But it won’t be utilizing some old transfer.   They will be doing a new transfer from the interpositive elements!   This is nothing but good news.  Especially for those who were disappointed with previous Blu-Ray releases.  We know that Criterion, as is there wont, will do this right!  Although there isn’t an official announcement yet, we feel totally confident in saying this release will happen!

  • SUSPIRIA Headed for Blu-Ray!

Posted in Movies, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror with tags , , on February 4, 2010 by ghostradioworld

Some films are just made for blu-ray.  Dario Argento’s Suspiria is one of them.  It’s wild visuals full of vibrant primary colors is what this format is all about.  But U.S. DVD collectors wept a tear recently, when Europe was treated to this gem on blu-ray.   But we dried those tears quickly, because reports filtered out that the transfer was nothing to write home about.   But now American Cinematographer reveals this:

[Suspiria Cinematographer Luciano] Tovoli recently revisited Suspiria at Technicolor Rome to supervise a new HD transfer, which will result in a Blu-ray release this spring …

Time to start planning those Suspiria parties!

    CLASH Headed to Blu-Ray

We’re mixed about Hollywood’s recent obsession with remakes.  But one thing we love about it:  The original films get fancy re-releases on DVD and/or Blu-Ray.  The original Clash of the Titans is the latest film to benefit from this.   The remake hits screens in late March 2010.  And we’ve just learned that Warner Home Video will release  a Blu-Ray early in the month, March 10, 2010 to be exact.

The Blu-Ray will feature a forty page booklet and these other features:

  • A Conversation with Ray Harryhausen featurette
  • Maps of Myths and Monsters Gallery
  • Trailers of this 1981 Original and the 2010 Version
  • Exclusive photo booklet of the new Clash of the Titans
  • Sound cool.   Count us in!

Blu-Ray News: Lionsgate Releasing Horror Favs on Blu-Ray!

Posted in Movies, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror with tags , , , , on September 3, 2009 by ghostradioworld

    lionsgate

Lionsgate is expanding its commitment to catalog titles with Blu-Ray releases of Cujo, The Monster Squad and the original My Bloody Valentine.  Unfortunately, these releases won’t be out in time for Halloween.  But their November 24, 2009 street date will make then excellent stocking stuffers for your horror minded friends and relatives.

There’s no news yet on the extras which will grace these disks.  But each of these films had deluxe DVD treatment, so we expect they’ll probably at least port some of the features from those releases.

    Godzilla Stomps onto Blu-Ray

The original Japanese version of Godzilla (Gojira) hits Blu-Ray on September 22, marking the monster’s first stateside foray onto HD.  Feast your eyes on the box art above.

This release will be feature most of the extras from the 2008 Classic Media release.  But will not include the audio commentary.  Why was this excluded?  Godzilla completists will not only be forced to double-dip, but they won’t be able to sell or give away the original DVD.

This lumpy-headed thinking puzzles us collectors.

Regardless daikaiju (giant monster) fans should be excited about getting to see on of their favorite monster in full HD!
