ROCKETEER Comes to Blu-Ray!

Fans of Disney’s live action version of Dave Stevens’ comic book classic Rocketeer rejoice!  This film which never had a high quality DVD in the United States.  No extras and not even 16:9 enhanced.  But now it’s getting a new release!  On Blu-Ray.  Although we don’t yet know the extras, the release already available for pre-order on Amazon is dubbed the 20th Anniversary Edition.  So we expect some kind of extras.  This edition hits shelves on December 13, 2011.

GODZILLA (1954) to Get Criterion DVD/Blu-Ray Release!

Hints have been bouncing around the ‘net for some time about Criterion giving the original Godzilla a deluxe, proper DVD and Blu-Ray transfer.  But many poo-pooed them.  Claiming it wasn’t the type of thing Criterion did.  Or other lame dismissals.  Then a mysterious photo (above) of a film can with Japanese writing appeared on the Criterion Facebook page.  The writing translates:   “Dupe Posi(tive): GODZILLA. Reel 2 of 10 Reels. Toho Company, Ltd.”!

For those who understand the Criterion mindset.  This can only mean one thing:  Criterion is indeed doing a DVD/Blu-Ray release.  But it won’t be utilizing some old transfer.   They will be doing a new transfer from the interpositive elements!   This is nothing but good news.  Especially for those who were disappointed with previous Blu-Ray releases.  We know that Criterion, as is there wont, will do this right!  Although there isn’t an official announcement yet, we feel totally confident in saying this release will happen!

New TRON: LEGACY CD on the Way!

Bleeding Cool spotted an interesting listing on Amazon:

According to the listing, Tron: Legacy Reconfigured [above] will feature “various” artists. This may just be placeholder info, though, and my hunch is that this will actually be a remix album of some kind, something that will see Daft Punk revisit and rework their compositions with freedom, liberated from having to match the on-screen mood and action.

We loved this Daft Punk score.   So this sounds like something right up our alley.  We bet it will be up your alley as well.  We hope BC are right in their prediction.

Watch THE KEEP Online!

Michael Mann’s The Keep still doesn’t have a U.S. DVD release.  But now fans can watch this eighties horror classic online, thanks to Netflix’s watch instantly feature.  And those who’ve never heard of it can experience it for the first time.

New Video of the Ventriloquist Dummy from MAGIC!

This is an excerpt of a documentary which appears on the new Blu-Ray of Magic, released yesterday (10/12/10).  It features brand new video of “Fats” the ventriloquist dummy who starred in the film, and another dummy that was almost cast in the role.  Very creepy stuff.  Prepare for some nightmares.

GRINDHOUSE Theatrical Cut Headed for Blu-Ray

Despite it’s poor box office performance, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’ homage to Seventies exploitation films Grindhouse has legions of fans.  Count us among them.  But outside of purchasing an expensive Japanese Boxset, which is now out of print, one could not experience the theatrical cut of this movie at home.

Well, fans may have reason to rejoice, according to Blu-Ray.com:

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Genius Products and The Weinstein Company are set to release Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Grindhouse’ on Blu-ray on August 11. No edition details are available, other than this would be a two-disc set, but it may well be the theatrical Grindhouse double feature.

However, since no details have been released on this set yet, we have to keep this in the rumor category.  But we think its only a matter of weeks before you’ll be able to enjoy all the original, theatrical Grindhousey goodness at home.  Until that time, enjoy the trailer that opened the theatrical cut:

UPDATE:  Well, it took a while.  But it’s finally coming!  It’s been more than year since we posted this article.  But a Blu-Ray of the theatrical version of Grindhouse will be hitting stores on October 5, 2010.  Amazon already has it available for pre-order, click here!
