A Star that Should Not Be!

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy,” Hamlet said.  And, once again, scientists are forced to agree.  Because a truly impossible star has just been discovered.

Located in the constellation of Leo, this star (dubbed SDSS J102915+172927) contains almost no heavy metals.  Only hydrogen and helium.  This type of star was thought to be impossible.  Because, without heavy metals, the other elements shouldn’t be able to condense and form a star.    This has led many scientists to realize they may need to reexamine their theories of star formation.

So scientists are caught flat-footed once again.  And, you know what, we bet they love it!
