Although it has been rumored for some time, it is now official. Matt Smith will be leaving “Doctor Who”. His final starring appearance will be in the 50th Anniversary Special in November. But he was also appear in the Christmas Special in a cameo of some sort. Matt had this to say about his exit:

Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

“The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

Matt was the 11th actor to play the role of the Doctor on the iconic British series.  And third actor to play the role since its reboot in 2005.  He’s essayed the role during the period when Steven Moffat took over as the show runner.  It has been a successful but controversial period for the show and the character.  But most fans have been hugely complimentary of Smith’s handling of the.  After the jump, we look back on Matt’s tenure as the 900+ year old Timelord from Gallifrey.

Before the paperback book.  Before comics.   There were the Pulp.   They were named for the cheap pulpwood paper on which they were printed.  But they were famous for their exciting, often lurid covers.  The covers really sold these magazine.  So, like many other mags, when Christmas rolled around, they’d attach a Christmas theme to the covers.  But, being pulps, it never was quote as simple as that.

See some great examples after the jump.
