Confirmed (Or Maybe Not): Matt Smith to Face Daleks!

Daleks

Let the cheering (or jeering … or hissing) begin.  Sources are reporting that the Daleks will appear in Matt Smith’s first outing as the Doctor in Doctor Who.

Here’s the skinny form My Park Magazine:

The 26-year-old actor – who takes over from current Time Lord David Tennant next year – will face the legendary extraterrestrial mutants in his first adventure to please fans who think he is too young to play the iconic role.

BBC bosses reportedly decided to revive the Doctor’s most famous foes to boost show ratings as they are worried Smith will not be as popular as Tennant – widely considered one of the most successful stars of the long running sci-fi series.

A network source told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper: “They know fans will take a while to get used to Matt as The Doctor, so it makes sense to have him fight his most famous enemies. They always bring good ratings.”

BBC chiefs have previously revealed they plan to “step back in time” when designing the Tardis for the new series of the programme.

Instead of the current brown and orange interior, the time and space machine will have blue walls and white windows, similar to the original 1960s Tardis.

The new series of ‘Doctor Who’ – which stars Smith at the 11th Time Lord – is due to start next spring.

Edit:  According to Bleeding Cool the above news was confirmed by Russel T Davies at a Torchwood event at the National film theatre:

He also let people know that the inside of the TARDIS is getting a more retro look in the fifth series and that the Eleventh Doctor played by Matt Smith, will be facing Daleks in his very first episode.

We love the daleks and are happy whenever they appear on Doctor Who.   First adventure, last adventure … any adventure.  Just bring ‘em on!

And a retro look for the TARDIS?   That could be very cool!

Edit Two:  It appears Bleeding Cool may have had their wires crossed.  RTD didn’t makes these statements during the public section of the NFT event.  If he made them, they were to individuals after the event.

So we think this story goes back into the rumor category.  We’ve changed the headline to reflect that.

And one more thing.   The commentator, James, who suggested we check our facts, has a nice write-up on the NFT event on his blog.  You can check it out here.

  1. Sorry to be bursting bubbles and all, but at no point at the NFT did RTD say anything about Matt Smith’s first episode. Nor did he say anything about the look of the new Tardis.

He was guarded enough about the second episode of this coming series of Torchwood, refusing to give *any* details – he certainly wasn’t about to spoil the next series of Doctor Who..

  2. [...] was that creature not cute enough for Disney, some creatures who need a Doctor (or maybe not), and something that made Joss Whedon say [...]

  3. I’m sick of the Daleks. I think we need to move ahead, not retro. What is wrong with you BBC suits. We don’t need reruns with a new Dr. We need A new Doctor with new adventures and new, more cunning foes. The Daleks are not really very cunning, just overwhelming. Let’s get some smarts into the mix here. I’ve been watching for more than 30 years. I should count as an AVID watcher. That means my vote counts a lot.

  4. Peter,

I agree with you. We need new villians. I am currently writing a Doctor Who episode to send in to Steve Moffat, to see if he might be interested. I am currently on a thrid draft of the script and hope to have it completed by September. I have a new villian I have created and it is one who can be a recurring character with a very manipulative nature…

  5. I started watching Dr. who in 2005 the new seasons and so far by what ive seen in the reruns david was by my thoughts the best doctor compared to any. Im sure hes ready to move on and if matt smith gets the role i can asure u by what i see him doing is that manny fans are gonna quit watching the doctor who series. The new doctor (matt smith) looks like he is too sure of himself to happy and has none of the facial expresions that the origional doctors have the expresions of pain and regret with absolute despair with no whare to put the emotion. “Matts face isnt the face of a doctor”.

  6. Hey about shedding some light on that whole war with Great Vampires? They were good enemies of the time lords as well.

  7. AHH Matt Smith(N) David Tennant FTW
He just doesnt look good as a doctor! But i dont thiink he’s too young,
    ahh well :/
    He better be good though!
